With personal health apps in potentially every pocket, developers want vast troves of data to serve up and consumers want easier access to vital parts of their health history. But this also comes at a time with escalated privacy breaches and cybersecurity attacks on valuable patient data.
Regulations in the forms of the HIPAA and the 21st Century Cares Act have sought to bring some order to this chaos, but the finer points to these pieces of legislation are often unknown to many they affect. Further education on third-party apps and the associated updated regulations is paramount for consumers as well as all employees within the HIM, compliance, and security departments to help patients understand, manage and prevent the potential misuse of their medical records.
